Design Process at POP

There is a method to the madness here at the POP camp. Through innovation and detailed craftsmanship, we pride ourselves as an authentic standup paddleboard company, crafting almost every style of paddleboarding in the marketplace. From surf models to race models, to our newest creation of kids models (launching soon), we take the design process through a unique and comprehensive journey. Let’s dive into our process.

1 – Inspiration:
The key points behind our board inspirations involve a whirlwind of creative juices. “Once I see a certain color scheme or certain shape that catches my attention, everything just stops,” says Nick, Founder of Pop Paddleboards. Day in and day out the collective creativity never stops at POP Camp.

2 – Shape:
Boards come in all shapes and sizes, and at POP, we strive to design a shape for every type of rider. As stated by Nick, “this is the one area in the design process that has a purpose,” because it dictates the style and direction the board will go. Choosing the ideal and perfect shape dimension for each board is the key to providing each and every rider with the best possible experience on the water. No matter what level you are, we want you to reach your highest potential when you ride one of our boards.

3 – Design Concepts:
Design creation is the most exciting part of this process as the creative ideas come to life digitally, which Nick says “is when the fun begins!” After we’ve locked in the shape that we want to use, we start playing around with the design package and begin piecing the whole board together. Design concepts take time to develop, and we always put a lot of time and thought into this step to ensure that we provide our riders with the perfect board.

4 – Go to Market Graphic Package:
After we’ve designed the board, its time to put those designs through the process of elimination. Once we play with the design package, we can have five to fifteen different color concepts, but only one or two will be released to the market. So how do we narrow it down? We choose what we feel will be the most attractive and most complementary colors to the shape and purpose of the board.

5 – Manufacturing:

There are many ways to make a paddleboard in today’s marketplace, but there’s only one way to make it right. “Playing around with new materials can be dangerous, but also exciting – so this is where we stick to what works. Every board that I design, I ride and will also personally sell”, says Nick. At POP paddleboards, we love what we do, and we can’t wait for you to see what we have in store for 2019.

6 – R&D:
Now we start to know the stoke is real. Having the board in your hands, throwing it in the back of your truck, shooting down on your local break – that’s what it’s all about. As a board designer, seeing your art come to life comes with a lot of anxiety, it can even take the fun out of paddleboarding – but at POP, that’s impossible.  We ride the board for it’s intended use and pass it down to our brand ambassadors and at that point, we all share an “aha” moment and gear up to release the board to the marketplace.

7 – Perfecting the recipes:
We continue to improve and perfect our craft, striving to make each and every board better than the ones before. Product quality is our jam here at POP, and throughout the years we’ve seen our product push the boundaries of paddleboarding, and our company has grown because of it. At POP Paddleboards, we love what we do, and we can’t wait for you to see what we have in store for 2019.

8 – Enjoy the Board:

A lot of hard work and soul goes to each and every board that we manufacture. What we envision comes to life and our “Made for Making” motto will always live up to its status. Every step of the way we ensure that our customers will receive and ride the best board on the market. At POP, we enjoy the designing of our boards as much as we enjoy riding them – and we hope you do too!

At POP Paddleboards, we pride ourselves in providing sleek and attractive boards at an affordable price. We have just as good of a time designing our boards as we do riding them. We’re a SUP brand with a purpose – we’re here to manufacture your next adventure.

POP Loves Coffee

Here at POP Camp, our day doesn’t start until we’ve had our first cup of liquid energy. Some of us need it more than others, but ultimately, POP doesn’t function right without it. We need that caffeinated sip of divinity each morning (and every hour after) to be normal people. We have an addiction. We recently did a Q&A with some of our team members to show you what we mean.

Name: Joe the VP

Addiction Status: Recreational Coffee Drinker

Go-To Coffee Order: Lavender coffee from Rosetta

Preferred Brand/Roast: Rosetta in Laguna

Average Cups a Day: 0.25 cups

Why do you need coffee? I need coffee to make sure my coworkers do their job and keep the peace. I don’t drink it myself most of the time. I need the coffee for them.

Why would you skip coffee for the day? I mainly skip the coffee because it doesn’t mix well with my beer.

Name: Gretchen the Designer

Addiction Status: Gotta-go-to-rehab addicted

Go-To Coffee Order: Iced blonde americano with 3 pumps sugar free vanilla and extra cream

Preferred Brand/Roast: Kirkland’s Signature Breakfast Blend in the K-Cups is great when I’m running out the door and can’t wait in line at Starbucks.

Average Cups a Day: 3

Why do you need coffee? I need it because I hustle. Without it, I’m no hustler.

Why would you skip coffee for the day? Because I don’t have time to get it or make it, at which point, I’m more than likely dead.

Name: Vina the Socialite

Addiction Status: Caffeine-withdrawals-when-I-wake-up addicted

Go-To Coffee Order: Medium roast with coconut milk and sugar-free vanilla. Or with sugar-free cinnamon dulce if I’m feeling spicy

Preferred Brand/Roast: Anything but Folgers. I need real coffee.

Average Cups a Day: 2

Why do you need coffee? I need coffee because it’ll make me less sassy than I already am.

Why would you skip coffee for the day? I would never intentionally skip my coffee. It must’ve been Folgers in the cup.

Name: Nick the President

Addiction Status: Don’t-Talk-To-Me-Until-I-Have-Coffee Addicted

Go-To Coffee Order: white chocolate mocha, extra shot or a cortado

Preferred Brand/Roast: Rosetta in Laguna (Hi Brian)

Average Cups a Day: 3, but like half a cup at a time

Why do you need coffee? It keeps me doing what I do. It helps with creativity.

Why would you skip coffee for the day? Just thinking about this question makes me tired. I’d never skip coffee. Never. I’d make another coffee before my last coffee is finished.

Mike Ross Joins the POP Family

The POP crew is very excited to welcome a new waterman to the team! We’re happy to introduce Mike Ross as the newest brand ambassador for POP Paddleboards. Mike is a surf and SUP enthusiast who can also save your life! His daytime job as a firefighter/paramedic gives him just enough free time to get out on the water with his family and bring the brand of POP all over Florida.

“From the very first conversation I had with Mike, I knew he would be a weapon in the SUP industry,” Nick Lanfranco, POP Paddleboards founder, told us. “He’s a true waterman throwing it down on the Florida coastline. I speak for the entire camp when I say that we are excited to have him carry the POP flag.”

Mike’s journey into paddleboarding didn’t start by choice. Originally, the Ross family had a boat which they sold to move to their beachfront home in Palm Harbor, Florida. “We knew we wanted something right on the water, and we knew we could just get another boat later,” Ross told us. From there, Ross’ wife suggested they pick up a pair of paddleboards so they could still get out on the water without their boat. “I was totally against the idea,” he said. “But eventually, we did get a pair, and I was averaging 3 mile paddles every time I got out there.” He soon looked into races in the area and entered only to win 2nd place in 2 divisions. “I loved it after that, and even though we have another boat now, the paddleboards still go with us.”

Mike currently SUPs with the POP inflatables and enjoys them with his wife, two kids, and Saber, their dog. “We love and stand behind the product. Nick and the team are so easy to get ahold of, personable, and open minded when it comes to ideas and feedback,” Ross told us.

“Mike has given us a lot of great ideas even prior to our alliance. I can only imagine what’s to come now that he’s repping POP across the east coast,” Nick said.

After a surf session, you can likely find Mike at Fireside Pizza, drinking a Wavemaker. His favorite wave was surfed at Lance’s Left, Nicaragua and he once pet a manatee while on his board. When he’s not on the water, he can usually be found reading dystopian novels or watching Stranger Things. We look forward to Mike’s contribution to the POP family and can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Jaeger Johnson joins POP

“It was a long night,” said POP Paddleboards’ newest addition Jaeger Johnson as he stepped into the POP HQ on a sunny afternoon. POP VP of sales, Joe Sabina, took the Calgary born Canadian out for a night on the town. What did Jaeger have to say about the experience? “I’m still dizzy – need water,” he quipped.

Jaeger is part of the dream team of a selected group to help expand the POP brand across Canada.

Jaeger grew up on a healthy diet of sports. “Yes, I played hockey – but we all don’t play,” he jokes. “I actually was part of a swim team, the speedos were very comfortable.”

Aside from that, Jaeger fell in love with surfing, snowboarding and the action sports culture surrounding it. “The water is definitely my favorite place to be,” he said. “My all time favorite SUP spot is right in my backyard. A five minute walk and I’m there – Calgary is a pretty magical place.”

The introduction came from Nick Lanfranco, POP founder, when Jaeger’s family came to visit California. “I stepped on a board in Laguna Beach and started taking swells to the face the whole time,” Jaeger remembers. “After about an hour of getting my ass kicked, I started to get the hang of it and have been hooked ever since.” Jaeger continues to go back to that day when it comes to explaining what POP is all about.

“Talk about a Made for Making moment,” Jaeger says. “I got out of the water loving the sport and having a new respect for Mother Nature.” Those memories are what Jaeger brings back with him when it comes to the POP brand in Canada. “Why I’m addicted to this industry is the culture,” Jaeger said. “We paddle these spots together, we ride these boards together. It’s that common ground that brings us together.”

Jaeger, who got his start in fitness sales, will be hyper focused in Alberta and Ontario. Nick is more than excited to have the spirit of Jaeger in our brand. “He’s professional, people enjoy his company, and he believes in our brand philosophy,” Nick said.

Jaeger says it’s that idea that makes him proud to be part of the team. “The people behind this brand have a vision for the industry,” he says. “The idea is think big, act local. Let’s do this Canada.”
